the everything of nothing
Artist Statement and Inspiration:
When I started this piece, I envisioned a color palette and energy of a globe — blue and green. After the paint dried in the first layer, the colors mixed together to create a pool of teal. I was filled with discomfort looking at the piece and how far it was from my vision, and I thought about throwing away the canvas and starting over, but decided I would tuck it away behind my other blank canvases (hoarder tendencies or a deeper knowing, I’m uncertain, but glad I did).
After some time, I pulled the piece out to continue. I laid new colors atop the teal pool, and over time, the piece grew into something I could not have envisioned in my mind.
The everything of nothing represents the phases from ideation to fruition, and the reminder that if we stay connected to how we feel, we may respect the process. And in respecting the process, we give way to true creation. The frame of our mind is helpful in providing structure, but in a similar path, leads also to a path of frustration when the expected result is not met. This is one of my dearest works and lessons — that when I arrive at this junction to paradox, my mind has taken me as far as I can go, and I know it is time to search deeper in my heart.
