On the Space Between
Have you ever had an experience of going after something so hard because you think it’s what you want, and then suddenly you awake and think huh, that’s not at all what I want. What is it that I sought so hard in the first place? How do I get back on track?
Our attention focuses easily on the shiny object before us. These objects are thrilling, beautiful, sometimes chaotic. However, the objects or space in between is as important as the object in which it surrounds. We believe we see the center (often what in our direct line of sight) and naturally we see less on the peripheral subjects, but if we take a step to the side, we may see that what we thought was the center was not really the center at all. And if you take a step far back enough, you’ll see that all of these objects and spaces make our stories whole. For example, if you look at a single flower, she may be the center of your attention, but if you look at the bouquet in full, this may instill a different feeling. You’ll still see the single flower, but your line of sight has changed.
If there’s something you’ve been bringing your focus on heavily, use this is a sign to reflect and shift a little to the right (figuratively). And if you don’t see something new right away, can you take some time, let things settle, and then look again?
Time itself is a variable shift in perspective in itself. When you arrive in each moment in time with presence, find before you the clarity that’s been yours all along.
Optional Exercises/Journal Prompts:
What is something that’s been at the top of your mind lately? How much time do you spend each day thinking about this? And how do you feel doing this?
What is the first thing you think of when you awake? What is the last thing on your mind when you sleep? How do these items affect your dreams and your waking days?
What does your day look like on a day to day basis? What do your weekends look like? Do you find you tend to fill the space, or do you take the time to relax throughout the weekend. Are you able to hear your thoughts?
